A FAMILY ROOM should always be welcoming and comfortable, but that doesn't necessitate frumpy furnishings. DWELLINGS' Stephen Sills and James Huniford made a large space cozy and chic at the same time with expertly arranged custom furniture. They turned a round room into a true gathering place for reading, morning coffee, cocktails or even an informal dinner. The furniture floats in the middle of the room. "Everything doesn't have to go up against the wall," says Sills. They chose a mix of fabrics- velvet for the slat-backed chairs, olive green leather for the cube chairs and beige cotton linen for the sofa. "We knew during the day the room was going to get a lot of light and we didn't want to put curtains on the windows," Huniford says. "So we thought it was important to have colors that would complement the light, not fight it. To give the space an edge, they chose a rather unusual sculpture by Louise Nevelson. And of course, therešs the buoy with Montauk origins. "Instead of having wood in the fireplace in the summer," Sills explains, "you have a beautiful object echoing the shape of the hanging light."
